Description and Objectives

This one-day pre-course will utilize a combination of didactics, free papers, point-counter-point debate, scientific posters and audience engagement to present, review and discuss evidence based pediatric SCI/D best practice, contemporary controversies on complex problems relevant to pediatric SCI/D, and outcomes of pediatric SCI/D on the child and caregivers. Attendees of the course will:

1. Describe the epidemiology of pediatric SCI/D and discuss implications of regional trends and global variations
2. Understand the differential diagnosis of non-traumatic, acquired pediatric SCI/D
3. Describe treatment paradigms and evidenced based outcomes for non-traumatic and acquired SCI/D
4. Understand the tenets and preliminary outcomes of body-weighted supported treadmill training in children
5. Discuss the implication of pediatric SCI/D on informal caregiving, and identify potential interventions to support informal caregivers
6. Introduce newly developed International SCI Basic Data Sets for pediatric caregiving, participation, education and 0-5 year olds
7. Discuss the assessment, surgical technique, and outcomes of nerve transfers for restoration of upper limb
